10 June 2016 – Norwegian Meteorological Institute Celebrates 150th Anniversary

In the 1850s, the number of shipwrecks at sea increased among both warships and commercial ships. After the end of the Crimean War in 1856, demand grew for a weather forecasting service. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute was founded on 1 December 1866. Since the start of weather forecasting in the 1860s, Norwegian researchers and meteorologists have developed their knowledge about weather and weather prediction into a very precise service. Regular weather reports on the radio increased the attention we paid to the weather and the weather conditions in our long country. Today, the forecasts and information can be found on yr.no, a collaboration between the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and NRK. This website is used around the world.

Physicist Vilhelm Frimann Koren Bjerknes (1862-1951), his research and the academic community he built around it are in many ways the basis for all modern weather forecasting. The institute currently has its head office in Oslo and weather forecasting centres in Bergen and Tromsø. Weather service stations are also linked to four military bases and Longyearbyen.
In total, there are 450 employees at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Research is an important part of its work, and the institute is closely associated with international networks for meteorology.
