15 June 2018 – Fløibanen Funicular Centenary
Fløibanen Funicular and Fløyen are Bergen’s most popular tourist attraction, with around 1.5 million visitors every year.
Mount Fløyen lies 320 m.a.s.l. and offers a fantastic view of Bergen.
When work began on the Fløibanen Funicular in the autumn of 1914, it was supposed to take up to six months, but World World I and the subsequent commodity shortages delayed its opening until 15 January 1918. Since then, it has been operational continuously.
Fløibanen’s first cars were made of oiled teak, were partly open and could hold 65 passengers.
In the autumn of 2002, Fløibanen underwent the most significant renovation in the company’s history. Every car can now hold 100 passengers and has been given a modern yet classic design, with larger glass windows and an even better view for the passengers.
