The white-throated dipper is Norway’s national bird, and there is no question that the bird’s ability to survive in a barren landscape represents something typically Norwegian.
The white-throated dipper’s choice of nesting sites underlines what is special about this bird: It can namely build its nest behind waterfalls. This characteristically black and white bird thrives throughout most of Norway, and its wings make a special whirring sound while it flies that distinguishes it from other birds.
Its feathers are brownish-black with white markings on its neck and breast. This can vary among the sub-species, especially the brown underside. The females have almost the same plumage. The males, though, are somewhat larger than the females.
The white-throated dipper lives in waterfalls and rapids, and it can dive and swim short distances under water.
