How to write the address in Norway

When you are sending letters or parcels it is important that you add the correct address; both the street address and the postal number.

Here is a few examples for addressing in Norway.

Addressing recipients in Norway

Correct postal address is essential to ensure that your shipment reach the recipient quick and efficiently. Common to all addresses are that the postal number and place is always in the bottom line of the address.

Some examples of addressing recipients with mailboxes

Postal address to recipient with street address:

Postal address to recipient without street address, but are using a place name:

Postal address to recipient that neither have a street address nor a place name:

Addressing recipient using a P.O.Box

When a city have multiple P.O.Box facilities the name of the facility must be added:

Example of correct P.O.Box address to cities with only one P.O.Box facility:

Addressing a named person in a company

In the following example the shipment will be perceived as personal to the recipient:

Example of correct addressing when you receive or send to another persons postal address (c/o addressing):

Using a farm name together with the postal address

A farm name is not part of the postal address when a street name is available. If the sender wants to use a farm name in addition to a postal address, this should be placed on a separate line before the postal address:

Using residential number together with the postal address

Residential number is not part of the postal address. If the sender wants to use this in addition to the postal address, this should be placed on a separate line and after the key word "Residential number"*) before the address line:

Residential number is not be used if there is only one residence in the street address.. Residential number is not be used together with other addresses than street addresses.
If c/o addressing is used, place the residential number on a separate line:

*) Residential number ("Bolignummer") is used by the government to identify the residences with the same street address. The residence number contains of a letter and four numbers and must not be mixed up with the postal address. The residential number can be used if it is not getting in conflict with the actual postal address, see the examples above.

Poste Restante

Those passing through or staying temporarily in Norway, can get mail sent to Poste Restante. Such mailings must be addressed to a post office/Post in Shop.
